Learn from the Experts—Artificial Turf and Anti-Static Technology
In 2011, ForeverLawn announced their new Playground Grass Ultra with XStatic antistatic technology and it took the industry by storm. Static build-up is a major problem on playgrounds and affects children more so than others.
Children’s ears are more sensitive, but also children with hearing aids often have to remove their devices to avoid damage from the static on the playground. Playgrounds are not the only place static is a problem, it’s on every lawn!
There are generally two ways that static can be treated on artificial turf, on through a topical spray and one through large amounts of sand. The spray takes weeks of use to receive a desired effect on static and may not even work as needed. Large amounts of sand add to the cost of installation and development and offers different levels of success. In products such as XStatic antistatic technology is embedded into the grass blades itself and will not wear over time. Plus, it is effective immediately!

Static electricity can occur when two materials are moving in opposite directions and rubbing together. In extremely cold or warm weather, or when the air is especially dry, the static can increase. For most, it’s a nuisance but for others with sensitive electronic devices, it can cause severe damage. When normal actions happen on artificial turf then a turboelectric charge can build up but will eventually fade over time. When static electricity does arise on artificial grass it can have a variety of effects. On surfaces with infill, it will often stick to blades and clothing. Occasionally, a static discharge will cause the feeling of a small static shock when you touch someone or something. This has led artificial turf manufacturers to develop anti-static technology into the yarns.
Since artificial grass is an element with hardly any conductivity and is normal to be in contact with other elements, the formation of static electricity is common. Static electricity can affect us through small shocks, bothering sounds and even cramps. Artificial grass with metal object such as gates may be more sensitive to electricity. Companies like CCGrass has jumped on the bandwagon and are developing technology that can minimize the occurrence of static electricity and makes artificial grass more enjoyable. Anyone who takes the time and money to install artificial turf does not want their recreational area to be ruined with annoying static!

Just like many materials, it’s a natural phenomenon that artificial turf can create static. However, it’s common for many owners to not even notice the static on the grass. You may feel it in your hair on clothes but the real problem is for people with hearing aids. Fortunately, there are ways to resolve the problem. If possible, have the antistatic technology installed, if not then moisture should help lessen the static electricity present. Simply spray water on the turf or use an antistatic product. This may not fix the problem for good but it will help until you install antistatic technology.
